Mark Nichols: Architect of the Modern Internet

The title is documentary, not honorary. This page states the claim, dates it, and maps every document behind it. 1. The Claim

In 1996, Mark Nichols architected the Modern Internet and began the globalization of eCommerce.

The Modern Internet is the publicly accessible, eCommerce, media streaming, and QoS native Internet: a media layer riding above the host layer, with enforceable quality of service. It has a dated birth record, 1996 to 1997, in executed documents, stated in full at The Birth of the Internet.

Architect, on this page, is a list of acts, each dated and each documented. In 1996, Mark Nichols outlined the network architecture, financial proforma, productization, QoS metrics, and legal terms of service of the Modern Internet. He drew the genesis network diagrams: the hand sketch of June 1996, DRAFT.1 of July 1996 naming the Walnut Creek hub, and DRAFT.2 of October 1996 attached to the Cisco agreement as its addendum. He coined and built both halves of the solution: Merchant Transport, the product, and Tier-0, the network class that carried it. He negotiated, priced, and executed the Cisco Systems Remote Data Services Agreement, effective November 1, 1996. And he acquired and provisioned the physical build: the circuits, the cabinets, the interconnection, and the data centers, on six continents, under AS6553.

2. The Architecture

The architecture has two halves and one number. Merchant Transport is the end-to-end movement of a commercial transaction across a controlled global network path, named in writing in Sanne Higgins’ email of September 18, 1996. Tier-0 is the network class that carried it: a private fabric of International Private Line Circuits spanning six continents under Digital Island’s own autonomous system, AS6553, issued August 29, 1996, operating above the Tier-1 carriers. The number is 300: contracted SSL session completion under 300 milliseconds round trip, anywhere to anywhere, guaranteed under penalty, reaching approximately 99 percent of all Internet-accessible users. The Internet came in one grade until 1996, best effort; this architecture added the eCommerce grade: guaranteed, bounded, answerable. Per the record stated on the home page, that architecture is the industry standard today at the hyperscale operators worldwide.

3. The Dated Chain

In 1995, Mark Nichols operated PerfectWheels.com, an early eCommerce site, and learned the Internet’s failure modes as an operator.

In June 1996, Mark Nichols hand-drew the first global network blueprint while still employed at Sprint.

On August 5, 1996, Mark Nichols’ employment agreement was executed under the Digital Island name, signed by CEO Ron Higgins.

On August 29, 1996, autonomous system AS6553 was issued to Digital Island, Inc.

On September 6, 1996, Digital Island’s Hawaii registration stated its business as digital publishing.

On September 18, 1996, Sanne Higgins’ email put Merchant Transport, Mark Nichols’ eCommerce productization, into company circulation.

In the second quarter of 1997, Visa became the third enterprise customer.

In February 1998, Digital Island connected CERNET in Beijing to the global Internet at commerce grade over a dedicated T-1 IPLC.

In September 1998, E*TRADE invested and its CEO joined the board following adoption of Digital Island services.

In March 1999, MasterCard was announced as a customer.

In April 1999, Telefónica signed a reseller agreement rather than build a competing product.

In June 1999, Digital Island completed a $60 million NASDAQ IPO under the ticker ISLD.

In December 1999, Sun Microsystems and Inktomi invested approximately $25 million tied to up to 5,000 servers.

In March 2000, Digital Island reached a $12 billion peak public valuation.

In June 2000, Microsoft, Intel, and Compaq invested $45 million tied to more than 8,000 servers for broadcast-scale streaming.

In May 2001, Cable & Wireless acquired Digital Island for approximately $340 million.

4. The Three Proofs

The claim survives three independent tests, each stated in full elsewhere and only summarized here. First, the Cisco litmus test: Cisco Systems, with every carrier on Earth returning its calls, signed a three-person startup in November 1996 and put cisco.com on the network, because the product existed nowhere else; the full argument is at the Cisco record. Second, the carrier exclusion: forty-three incumbent carriers and ISPs were in the market and none offered a Tier-0 Merchant Transport product; the structural theorem is at Why Nobody Else Built It. Third, the market’s own verdicts in writing: Telefónica resold rather than build in April 1999, and Cable & Wireless bought rather than build in May 2001; the documents are at the Telefónica exhibit and the Cable & Wireless record.

5. What This Page Does Not Claim

Mark Nichols did not invent the individual features. TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL, BGP, DNS, the browser, and the router were decades of foundational work by others, fully credited on this site, and the Internet itself was activated by a collective of operators, inventors, financiers, and infrastructure builders. The claim on this page is the architecture of the Modern Internet: the layer that made those features into a commercial benefit, designed, productized, financially modeled, contracted, and provisioned beginning in 1996.
